BROWARD COUNTY, FL. – This October, Broward County Libraries Division in partnership with Susan G. Komen for the Cure is hosting several programs at the Main Library in observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Broward County Main Library is hosting the second annual exhibit “Stories to Share, part 2” photo documentary and film by Susan S. Buzzi. The exhibit opens with a reception on October 21, 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm, in the Main Library’s gallery six, 100 S. Andrews Avenue, Fort Lauderdale. The exhibit, which runs through November 14, will profile breast cancer survivors and medical professionals whose personal comments will accompany their portraits. This exhibit is sponsored by Susan G. Komen for the Cure and Broward County Libraries Division.

Florida photographer Susan S. Buzzi has met with survivors, care givers, family members, physicians and other persons involved with breast cancer and photographed the participants in candid shots using black and white film. Persons photographed have provided written commentary, which will be next to their photos, about their triumphs and battles with cancer.
October 24 is the Main Library Susan G. Komen For the Cure Wellness Fair on the first floor, 11 am to 3 pm. Tables at the free fair include:  Memorial Hospital Breast Cancer Center; FANM AYISYEN NAN MIYAMI, INC (FANM)- Haitian Women of Miami;  Florida Personal Growth Center; Gilda’s Club South Florida;  Scott Denny, Ph.D.;  South Florida Thermography;  Annie Appleseed Project;  Total Health Care & Media Spa;  Cosmetic Tattooing with Renee Maschinot ;  Healing Touch Buddies, Inc.;  Susan G. Komen for the Cure; Comprehensive Breast Center at Broward General Medical Center; Susan S. Buzzi, photographer; Broward County Libraries Division.
There will be health professional speakers in the Main Library auditorium, first floor. The speakers and topics for the day are:
11 a.m. - Acupuncture and Cancer Care presented by Dr. Scott Denny,  PhD, AP, DOM,
12 p.m. - Breast Cancer's new Partner in Crime…Melanoma presented by Stephanie Clarke Skin Care Specialist
1 p.m.- Breast Health for Dummies presented by Dr.  Nicholas Tranakas, M.D., Medical Director of cancer services for Broward Health and of the Comprehensive Breast Center at Broward General Medical Center
2 p.m. - Breast Cancer and the Image Recovery Center at Memorial Hospital presented by Mayra Lima, ARNP


At  2:30 p.m. there will be a teen program where young men and women may decorate a  journal in recognition of breast cancer awareness month and enjoy pink lemonade, Main Library 6th floor

Cindy Papale,  author of The Empty Cup Runneth Over, will speak on Sat., October 31, 2 to 4 p.m., at the Main Library, 6th floor. Cindy Papale is a breast cancer survivor who takes the mystery and the fear out of breast cancer by writing about the diagnosis and what happens afterwards. The book has two major themes. The first is honestly relating personal stories of what it is like to have breast cancer. The second major theme of the book is to provide informative chapters written by physicians in the field on many aspects of cancer and its treatment.
